The Theory Test
Before you can apply for a driving test, you must take and pass a theory test conducted by the DSA This covers items such as safety, traffic signs, documents, accidents and vehicle maintenance etc. In other words everything!! As from November 2002 the theory test includes the Hazard Perception Test.
To study for this, there are a number of books available from the DSA, Stationery Office and various High street stores. Your instructor may also carry stocks of these books
You will need to do most of the studying yourself, although your driving instructor will be willing to help you with any points that need clarifying.
To apply for the Theory Test, you can either fill out an application form available from your driving instructor or your local Driving Test Centre, which you can then post to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) or you could call 0300 200 1122 and book direct using your debit or credit card,online booking also available here. When booking by phone please have your debit/credit card and provisional driving licence number ready. Alternatively your driving instructor could book it for you.
The theory test costs £30, and is valid for 2 years once passed. You will need to pass your practical driving test during this time.
The driving theory test lasts about 1 hour and consists of 50 questions and 14 video clips for the Hazard Perception test. You must answer 43 of 50 questions correctly and score a minimum of 44 points on the Hazard Perception test to pass.
Instead of using pen and paper, candidates use computer touch screen technology, selecting their answers by simply touching a computer screen.
